Freedmen’s Bureau Rations Lists
Rations lists, (aka register of destitutes), are among the richest Freedmen’s Bureau resources for locating ancestors in pre-1870 records. In times of crisis, it is often the very old, the very young and the infirm who suffer food insecurity. In the days following the end of the Civil War, many elderly and infirm were in need of food rations. Agents of the Freedmen’s Bureau recorded the names of those to whom rations were issued. The records here contain the names, ages and plantations of residence for Freedmen in Berkeley County, SC.
If you do not have pre-1870 records for your ancestor or have not located them in the 1870 US Census, rations lists can provide important leads for focusing your research on a specific location. They can also provide clues to an ancestor’s final slaveholder. To learn the names of the slaveholders who owned the plantations listed here, you can consult South Carolina Plantations database at SCIWAY.
To learn more about rations lists, please see our post “Going In Depth ~ A Look at Some of the Richest Record Types in SC Freedmen’s Bureau Records.”

Wonderful. My maternal grandmother and her family are all from this area. Cross, Pineville, St. Stephen, Eutahville, Eadytown. Our family reunions every 2 years are held in Cross. Where was this cabin located? On whose property?
Cross South Carolina the home of my maternal grandmother’s family. She and her double first cousin test as 100 per cent African. They and the relatives lived in area of what was once Trial South Carolina on their family Brutus and Adeline (Bennett) Jones Rice Plantation.
Jones Bennett Wigfall Ravenel Nelson Rivers Prileou Washington are some of the many family names. My husband’s maternal grandfather’s family from same area Berkeley County, Cross South Carolina the Levine Family.
We attend family reunions that are held every two years in Cross, South Carolina. I have traced back 7 to 8 generations on all four lines of my grandmother’s ancestors. I have the blessing of knowing grandma and my great grand ma ….I have heard the first hand legacy and oral narratives of the generations before them.
Wow, you are truly blessed to know so many ancestors and have oral history recalling their lives.
